SMPS Chicago New Member Event - February

As this month's official guest, Meghan Johnson, Programs Chair of SMPS Chicago, answered a few questions on how SMPS has helped her career and professional growth. Join her at the lunch next week to learn more!

For questions regarding the lunch, contact: Lauren Mead, RTKL Associates, Inc., [email protected]

Where do you work and what’s your role?
I work at ARCADIS as a National Client Development Manager, supporting national internal strategies within our Client Development group, and also support our local Chicago office in Business Development efforts for our buildings and transportation groups.

Why did you join SMPS Chicago?
I joined SMPS Chicago as a transfer member from the SMPS Omaha (Nebraska) Chapter. I became involved in SMPS Omaha when I started working in the A/E/C industry there. Then when I moved to Chicago, I thought continuing my membership here would be very beneficial to becoming more aware of the Chicago A/E/C industry and growing my local network.

How has SMPS been beneficial to you, your firm, and/or your career?
SMPS has been extremely beneficial to me because I have been able to grow my career and network, all thanks to being involved in SMPS. I’ve gained great friendships through SMPS. Most importantly, I think being involved on a committee and now serving as the Programs Director has taught me a lot and has helped me grow both as an individual and in my career.

How can a new member of SMPS get the most out of their membership?
First and foremost by taking advantage of all of the great events SMPS hosts. This includes new member events, as well as our monthly lunch programs and special events, including happy hours and professional development events. And don’t be scared to attend these events alone. The number of people you will meet at just one SMPS event will be worth it. Another great way to get involved is by joining a committee.

What was the most fun event you attended for SMPS?
The first Holiday Party I attended my first year living in Chicago was a lot of fun. I was so scared to attend because it was my first official SMPS Chicago event and I was by myself and didn’t know anyone. But I quickly met so many people who were also new members and had a great time.

What do you do to kick back and relax?
I am very active, so I enjoy doing any activity outside or going to the gym. I am also a huge Blackhawks fan and Kansas basketball fan (Rock Chalk!) so evenings and weekends during the winter/spring months are quite busy attending or watching games almost every night. I am also big into reading, cooking and baking.

What is your favorite musical group/performer?
I have a long list of favorite musicians but I would have to say JT is definitely one of my favorites. I have followed him his whole career (yes, N’SYNC was my favorite group growing up and I know all of their dance routines!) and I haven’t missed a show of his…except when I sold my tickets to his last show in December so I could attend the SMPS Holiday Party! I also love country music. And of course, I could never put anyone above The Beatles.

What is the most interesting place you’ve visited?
While on my honeymoon in Mexico in October, we went to visit the Mayan ruins of Coba. One of the main attractions in Coba is one of the ancient pyramids that is still open to the public to climb its 130 steps to the top. The amount of history in this area was incredible, especially knowing that Coba was settled in 100 AD. And then to think that only a small percent of the hundreds or thousands of Mayan sites have been excavated or uncovered shows how much there still is to learn about this ancient civilization.

Name the most famous person you’ve had a face to face encounter with (“brush with greatness”)?
When I was in first or second grade and Bill Clinton was President, he made an appearance in the city my family lived in at the time (Carmel, Indiana). They landed his helicopter in the field behind our home, so naturally my siblings and I were very excited to get to see the President of the United States. It was pretty cool.
