Welcome to our New Member Lunch spotlight! Each month, a guest from the Board of Directors will be joining us at the new member lunch (NML) to introduce themselves and tell us a little bit about their role and background. This month, we’re joined by Jessica Hemauer, Special Events Co-Director of SMPS Chicago!

In advance of this month’s NML, here’s a little bit about Jessica:

Where do you work and what’s your role?

Rider Levett Bucknall, we are a cost consultancy, project management, and advisory service firm. My role is Business Development & Marketing. 

Why did you join SMPS Chicago?

I joined SMPS to make connections with others in the A/E/C industry and learn more about my field. 

How has SMPS been beneficial to you, your firm, and/or your career?

I have gained so many contacts (and friends) from being part of SMPS. It has been the most beneficial organization I have joined. 

How can a new member of SMPS get the most out of their membership?

I feel I was able to get so much from my membership because I became involved in a committee. I have been able to step up as Director of Special Events. This has gotten me over the fear of public speaking and this role has helped me learn a lot as well.

What was the most fun event you attended for SMPS?

The most fun event I attended was the Holiday event in 2014. We partnered with AIA Chicago.

What do you do to kick back and relax?

I enjoy relaxing to A&E. I love their true crime series.

What is your favorite musical group/performer?

My favorite performer would be Stevie Nicks. I also love techno music.

What is the most interesting place you’ve visited?

The most interesting place I have visited I think would be the underground caves in Mexico as well as Jacob’s Well in Austin, Texas. 

Name the most famous person you've had a face to face encounter with ("brush with greatness")? 

I was a server at a restaurant where Adrian Young, the drummer of No Doubt was a customer… I also lived with the family of Dan Andriano, a member of Alkaline Trio. I’ve met various Dj’s including Richie Hawtin & Adam Beyer. I’m sure I’ve had more brushes with greatness but I won’t list them all.

If you could spend 15 minutes with any living person, who would it be and why?

 If I could spend time with any living person it would have to be a member of NASA so I can learn more about extraterrestrial life and the truth behind area 57. 

About the program: Exclusive to our new members, we have a monthly lunch program for the entir  first year of membership!  These lunches are designed to familiarize new members with the chapter, expand their networks, and demonstrate the various ways to become involved.

If you answered yes, then nominate them for a 2016 Forward Award!

Nominating individuals for a Forward Award provides an opportunity to show employees, and the marketplace, that effective marketing and business development truly does contribute to the growth and success of an organization. It also provides employees with an opportunity to be recognized amongst their industry peers.

This year we are asking firms to nominate individuals for two distinguished awards: Marketer of the Year and Business Developer of the Year. All nominations will be reviewed by the SMPS Wisconsin Board of Directors, with two individuals being selected as this year's winners.

Completed nomination forms are due by April 8, 2016 to Alison Nolan at [email protected]. There is NO nomination fee.

Please note: Winners will be notified prior to the Awards Program.

Plan to attend the ceremony
The Marketer of the Year and Business Developer of the Year award winners will be honored at the SMPS Marketing Excellence Awards Program on May 12, 2016, at ONESTO in Milwaukee's Historic Third Ward. Look for more details in the coming weeks!

SMPS WISCONSIN 2016 MARKETING EXCELLENCE AWARDS NOMINATIONS
DUE: MARCH 24, 2016

Do you want to gain industry recognition for your hard work?

Submit your firm's creative marketing projects/initiatives to the 2016 SMPS Wisconsin Call for Award entries!

Many firms choose to enter their work for the visibility and recognition an award can bring to the firm and marketing department - don't be left behind, you should too!

There is one submission category - the SMPS Wisconsin Marketing Excellence Award. Four projects will be will be selected winners, with three winning Marketing Excellence Awards and on receiving Best in Show. Awards will be given only if the entries meet all necessary criteria.

SMPS Wisconsin members and non-members (within the A/E/C industry) can submit. Projects must have been completed between January 1, 2014 and December 31, 2015.

What do you need to do to get started?
Entry requirements and submittal steps can be found on the 2016 SMPS MEA Entry Form.

  1. Select your most award-worthy project.
  2. Create a Clarification Statement (answer Entry Questions).
  3. Include photos with your project.
  4. Submit your nomination by March 15, 2016. Please see payment information on the entry form.

  • Does the response “answer the mail” in meeting what’s requested in the RFP/RFQ?
  • Does the response clearly convey your knowledge of the client and project—the issues the client is facing, how you propose to solve those issues, the benefits gained by the client, and evidence of where you’ve previously done it? Does it speak to them, or is it just all about you?
  • How does it read—grammatically and visually? Is it easy for readers to pick up on key information and messages?

Andrew has served in a marketing or business development capacity in the A/E/C industry for more than 17 years. As the SGH’s first ever full-time business developer in its 60-year history, he is responsible for establishing and strengthening relationships with clients and industry partners, building awareness for the firm’s office in the metro NYC, DC and Chicago markets, leading the initiative to increase the firm’s business development culture. Andrew was recognized as an SMPS Fellow in 2013, and is a CPSM since 2005. He was a chapter board member for 12 consecutive years, has participated in the NY Chapter’s Mentor Program for eight years, and is a member of its Chapter Advisory Council (CAC). At the national level, he is a past chair of the Presidents’ Leadership Symposium (PLS) and currently the chair for the new Seller-Doer Symposium as part of Build Business 2016.

Jason P. Vesuvio

Jason is the program director of business development for Faithful+Gould Americas, and has 17 years of experience in the architecture/building industry, as a marketer, business developer, and project manager of professional services. His past employers include Structure Tone, HNTB, Pavarini McGovern, and Ellana Construction Consultants. He served as the 2012-13 New York chapter president of SMPS and sits on the board of advisors for Pratt Institute’s CM program and the Manhattan board for the Greater New York Council of the Boy Scouts of America. He also belongs to SCUP, CoreNet, IFMA, ACE Mentoring, ULI, and CMAA. Raised in New Jersey and a proud Brooklynite, Jason is the adoring uncle of 12 nieces and nephews, a hack musician, world traveler, and an Eagle Scout. He’s also not even the best marketer in his home…

Jen has served the A/E/C industry for 20 years in a variety of business development and marketing roles. She recently founded Ignite Coaching & Consulting, a full service coaching and consulting firm specializing in doer-seller/business developer training and coaching; relationship, leadership, association and professional development; strategic planning and implementation; facilitation and more. Jens’ combination of a genuine love for relationships and talent for developing and maintaining them coupled with her passion for teaching and her methodical approach to strategy development, implementation, and maintenance have led to her reputation as a leader in the professional services industry. Based in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, Jen serves clients across the country. Together, with her husband Derek, they love to travel and spend time with their family and friends, including their dog and three adult children.

Kate Mullaney, CPSM
Senior Associate, Business Developer: Arts, Community & Education Practice

Kate has more than 17 years in marketing and business development in the AEC industry. She leads business development for the Arts, Community & Education practice for HGA Architects and Engineers in Milwaukee, making her a new member of SMPS Wisconsin. Kate’s role involves strategy, business planning and reporting, strategic client pursuit, and coaching technical staff. Before joining HGA in January, Kate served as regional business development director for HDR Architecture, director of business development for Cotter Consulting, and director of corporate business development for Primera Engineers. She studied Communications at St. Norbert College in De Pere. Kate is a CPSM since 2009, served as President of SMPS Chicago in 2012-13 and was recognized nationally as the President of the Year. She serves as a member of the Business Development Institute faculty for SMPS National, and speaks regionally and nationally on business development topics. In her past life, Kate fronted a rock band and sang backup vocals in several others.
